Seaside Sales

This project's aim was to learn about an industry we were interested in and could learn from.

I naturally gear towards muted tones and in-depth explanations of my processes. When designing for Children you have to communicate without all of the verbal embellishment

due to their limited vocabulary. This outcome helped me step out of my comfort zone.

"I see even just one minute of interaction with children as winning"
- Stefanie Posavec

This sentence struck me in an interview I conducted with Data Visualisation Designer, Stefanie Posavec. It reminded me that children aren’t going to want to decifer charts

& numbers and passively consume the information. They want to engage.

Money is a fundamental aspect of our society, yet many struggle with it.

Games like to start you off with a lump sum to get going, but that’s not reality.

There is a major lack of education around monetary responsibility, considering

its importance, which is why I created Seaside Sales; a game infusing the key principles of acquiring a mortgage into an interactive worksheet and card set.

The final artefact is a mathematical game. It consists of a Worksheet, Sandcastle Cards that children can decorate and customisable Occupation Cards. The Worksheet and Cards are laminated so that after each session children can rub off their answers, allowing the worksheets to be reused. This is an environmental and economical solution for schools.

To add an element of interactivity and give the kids more control I decided not to have ready-established occupations. Instead there is an activity where the children choose and draw their top 5 jobs, getting them invested in the game.
